Lucy’s Story
Lucy has loved writing since before she could hold a pen. As she grew older, that love of writing naturally expanded into a love of teaching. She began volunteering in academic settings, running writers’ circles, and tutoring on the side. By college, that work had evolved into a small tutoring business.
While studying psychology as an undergraduate at Stanford, Lucy became especially interested in understanding how people learn. She joined a research lab focused on emotion regulation, where she contributed to ongoing projects and eventually designed and conducted her own studies.
After graduating in 2024, Lucy moved to Boston to focus on my work full-time. Today, she brings together her background in writing, teaching, and psychology to support students in developing their skills and confidence.
How Lucy Works
Lucy’s approach is guided by three core principles:
Teaching starts with empathy. Lucy takes the time to understand each student–their strengths, their interests, and what’s going on in their life–and builds a relationship grounded in trust and mutual respect.
There are many right ways to learn. Lucy teaches the student in front of her, adapting her approach based on how they think and what helps them engage. This may mean incorporating a student’s interests into a lesson or using creative, unconventional strategies to make concepts click. This flexibility is especially important for students who haven’t found success with more traditional approaches.
For Lucy, rigor isn’t about pressure or perfection. It’s about growth. She often tells her students, “I care about you too much not to hold you to a high standard.” Lucy also holds herself to that same standard, drawing on research and evidence-based practices to guide her teaching.
